Today, there are more commercial vacancies on this portion of Lake Street than the rest of the Street from Hiawatha to Lake Calhoun combined.
East Lake Street Walking Tour | Redesign, Inc.
Ouch. East Lake Street needs help, but I’m out of ideas. There was always talk about restaurants and bars opening up, but it never happened, and the one big get for Longfellow, Turtle Bread, chose a much quieter neighborhood insection four blocks off of Lake. And the rumored Blue Door Pub is looking for the same.
East Lake between 35W and Hiawatha is packed with Latino and African businesses, but except for Nuevo Rodeo and T’s Place, they never really moved east of Hiawatha.
There are plenty of great places along East Lake (Longfellow Grill, Craftsman, Merlin’s Rest), but far too many empty buildings.
