When you superimpose a soccer field on top of NASA’s map, it turns out Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin — the entire time they were there — barely crossed 90 yards of moon! What Neil called “a giant leap for mankind” wasn’t quite as giant as it seemed. Oh, the trip was a “leap” to be sure, a fantastic accomplishment, but the first moon explorers explored an astonishingly small area.

Typocartography

Inspired by Jenny Beorkrem and her fantastic Ork Posters series, I’ve created a Minneapolis neighborhood map, formed entirely of typographic elements.

Each of Minneapolis’ 80+ neighborhoods is represented. The letters in each neighborhood’s name forms its boundaries. Type is set in Helvetica Neue Condensed Bold.

If your walls would like one, proofs are available for order through the Noisome Misdeeds Mercantile. They are fifteen bucks, 22” x 35”, and they ship the first of August.

OMG

I love that I can now see all of my Foursquare check-ins on a map, thanks to Last Night’s Check-ins. That’s one of the things I miss most about Dodgeball.

This map is one of the most beautiful depictions of the Mississippi River that I’ve ever seen. Each color marks a different course that the river has taken throughout its history. If I ever write a book, I want this to be the cover.
(Fisk, 1944. Map of ancient courses of the Mississippi River, Cape Girardeau, MO - Donaldsonville, LA. Plate 22-8.).

Wow.
